Book Haul

My Fall Book Haul

Hello lovely readers, my book haul for this fall is relatively small. I haven’t had a ton of time to read recently and so I have a small collection of books that I’ve purchased not to mention I still have tons of unread books on my self. It may look larger, because I forgot to put the books I got from marginsbox in my summer book haul. I wanted to make sure to share them with you though so here they are too! There are a few nonfiction books this haul. I always try to encourage myself to read at least a couple nonfiction books a year to continue to learn and think critically about topics. Enjoy!

My Physical Books

Fiction

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell. I read the first Simon Snow book and while it was pretty good I am curious on the what comes after. I’ve never really read a book that explores the aftermath of what happens to a hero who has lost his power so I’m interested on where this will go.

Kingdom of Soul by Rena Barron. I love magic books, but a lot of them have gotten old and just honestly feel like Harry Potter spin-offs, but from what I’ve read of this book so far I’m really enjoying it. It has already introduced rich tribal nations and a character who is struggling with her lack of magic. I’m still reading it, but I’ve enjoyed the new spin on magic and world building so far!

Crier’s War by Nina Varela. I’m going to be honest I’m kinda scared to read this book. I’ve heard so much hype about it that I’m a little worried my expectations are going to be too high, but androids taking over with an enemies to lovers story line. I’m so intrigued!

Wicked Fox by Kat Cho. I received this is my third Marginsbox. I have mixed feelings about it based on the summary, but haven’t yet had a chance to read it. I do like the concept of tricky fox women though so I have hope.

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo. I haven’t read this book either yet though I’ve heard so many excellent things about it.

Somewhere Only We Know by Maurene Goo. This is the second book I got in my Marginsbox. I’m gonna be honest and say that I would probably never have picked this book myself. I’m not a huge fan of flat out romance myself, but it could be interesting.

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow. There’s something nostalgic in the summary of this book that just calls to me. It’s also supposed to be a fantasy novel so I’m excited

Nonfiction

Knowledge, Difference, and Power: Essays Inspired by Women’s Way of Knowing. I picked this book up because another educator was speaking about it as an interesting take on ethics and morality and I wanted to give it a shot to see what it’s all about. Found it at my local bookstore.

The Pharaoh’s Treasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet. I found this book at a Ren Faire I went to and it sparked my interest. Ancient Egypt has always been interesting and I’d like to know more about the origin of paper. Not really interested in the rise of western civilization bit, but we’ll see.

Whose Story is This? Old Conflicts, New Chapters by Rebecca Solnit. A book about who controls the narrative of our stories and how that power is starting to slowly change hands. I’m so interested and excited to read this!

My Summer Book Haul

So, this summer has been pretty crazy for me. However, when I have the rare day off I often find my way back into the book store purchasing books I have no time to read. Whether I can read them or not though I am nonetheless super excited about them! Check out my summer book haul! All title contain a link back to Goodreads if you’re interested in summaries and ratings.

My Physical Books

Spin the Dawn: I got this book as an ARC from Netgalley and I couldn’t be more thrilled by this book. If you enjoy beautifully written mythology and fantasy adventure quests then I really couldn’t recommend this book enough to you. I honestly can’t wait until the next book.

Once & Future: I’ve been waiting for this book ever since I heard about it. I’m not really a big fan of SyFy, but a gender bent Arthurian tale? I’m just too intrigued to pass it up. I’m so excited to read this.

This Time Will Be Different: Not a fantasy novel, but the summary about flower shops and historical inequality seemed so soft, but powerful to me that I wanted to give it a shot.

Gods of Jade and Shadow: Much like Spin the Dawn I got this as an ARC from Netgalley and I just fell in love with it. If you’re interested in some Mayan mythology and some ideas that make you think you’ll fall in love with this book as much as I did.

Kings, Queens, and In-betweens: I tried to get this as an ARC on Netgalley, but unfortunately didn’t get access to it. This seems like the best type of story that anyone whose different might be interested in reading. It seems to be about finding yourself, but without the limitations of labels or expectations.

The Candle and the Flame: I wanted this book if nothing for its beautiful cover, but I kinda lost track of it until I saw it in the bookstore. I’ve always been interested in the silk road and if you’re going to add a fantasy element I can’t wait to see how it reads.

Nocturna: I really hadn’t heard of this story anywhere, but I saw it in the bookstore and it caught my interest. Gods of Jade and Shadow definitely peaked my interest in Latinx-inspired stories and I’m excited to give this story a read.

The Wise Man’s Fear: There is probably going to be zero diversity in this novel, but it’s a continuation of a book I’ve already read and really enjoyed. The storytelling and world building is just phenomenal.

My Netgalley E-books

Blood of the Pack: I can’t really recommend this book. I struggled to get through it, but if you’re intrigued, but lesbian werewolves you may want to check it out.

Wildflowers: Allaha of the Mountain: The summary sounded interesting and it was lgbtqa, but I’m struggling to remain interested.

My Physical Copies

On the Come Up A female rapper dealing with some drama? It may sound trivial, but if you know anything about Angie Thomas then you know there’s something deeper here.

King of Scars Back to the Grishaverse. I’ll admit so far I’ve only read the first book in the original series, but I really enjoyed it. Battling the darkness that comes with immense power? I think that’s really interesting.

The Fever King Noam and Dara are exceptional. If you want a diverse book with deep characters and political messages then this is the perfect book for you.

The Wicker King A teen who think he’s in a fantasy world who may actually just be battling mental illness? I’m so excited to read this!!!!!

Black Leopard, Red Wolf I’m interested in this book. A shifter who uses his skills to track a young boy. There’s been a lot of hype about this book.

The Wolf in the Whale I love Jordanna Max Brodsky’s work and I’m super excited about reading the intertwining of Inuit and viking mythology.

I was Anatasia The Romanov family has always been a really interesting point of history to me. I’m excited to read this new version of Anatasia.

Pachinko I love historical East Asia. I haven’t gotten the opportunity to read much in that genre so I’m excited to read this. This book seems like it’s going to go deeply into the power and consequences of family

My Netgalley eARCs

I’m super excited about all four of these books!

The Bird King a magic map and fantasy, historical fiction? I’m really jazzed about this! I’m half way through and this is a beautiful book. It’s slower paced, but I find it doesn’t bother me at all.

Gods of Jade and Shadow a story about a death god and a girl? Color me intrigued

Spin the Dawn a Mulan-like story? Sold!

Bursts of Fire addiction to Heaven? Three sisters? Interesting

Book Haul

My January Book Haul

So, I’ve seen many blog posts floating around about people’s book hauls. I’m always super curious about what other people are buying and reading so I’ve decided to share my own. I’ve gone a little crazy this month so I’ve got a lot to share!

Here are most of my books, but this is mainly just to show off my bearded dragon, Smaug.

My Physical books

Below are the books that I mostly purchased this much, with one exception that I borrowed from the library.

The Wicked King by Holly Black. I’ve been a huge Holly Black fan since high school and I continue to really enjoy her work. This is the sequel to The Cruel Prince and wow. Strong female characters and court intrigue. I love it!

Evermore by Sara Holland. So, I purchased this book not realizing that it was a sequel. Oops, but the plot just sounds so intriguing. I’ve read mixed reviews though so we’ll see how it turns out. Maybe I’ll read the first book first.

Girls Write Now by a whole lots of ladies. As someone who works in education I’m forever looking for way to empower young girls and women. This book is an anthology written by young women about the personal experiences. Very excited about this!

The Kingdom of Copper by S. A. Chakraborty. This is the sequel to The City of Brass. I loved the first book and I was very excited to read the second one. I’ve heard some rumors about the content though and while it sounds just as brilliant as the first it also seems to end on a sad note which makes me a bit hesitant to read it.

Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman. Dragons? Count me in!

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan. I’ve only read the first couple pages so far, but I’m already in love with it.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. Read this book! It’s wonderfully done. It’s a long read, but well worth your time.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I’ve been meaning to read this books since it’s come out. I finally have in my hands.

The complete Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. This book series has won so many awards that I can’t wait to see what it’s all about.

NetGalley eARCs

Fury by Will O’Shire. I requested this book, because of the cover and it looked interesting. It was short fic. It had potential, but I wasn’t very impressed.

Prince of Air and Darkness by M.A. Grant. An lgbt novel that has fantasy elements. It’s a nice entertainment read, but I would have liked more world building.

No Man of Woman Born by Ana Mardoll. I requested this book because of the title and the description. It’s a series of short stories. The author was very heartfelt.

Wild Country by Anne Bishop. I was so excited to see this coming out. I love this series.

Those are the books I received/ bought this month! Have you purchased any of these books too? What other books have you purchased this past month?
